Remeha Gas 220 Ace high-efficiency condensing boilers have been specified at an exciting new digital and media centre in Carmarthen due to their high operational efficiencies and proven reliability.
Canolfan S4C Yr Egin is the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s new creative hub, and the new main headquarters for the Welsh language broadcaster S4C.
Yr Egin is an ambitious 3,700 square metre development located on the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) campus. Opening this autumn, the striking new building extends over three floors, and is home to a range of creative and digital companies, in addition to S4C.
The innovative development provides new enterprise incubation units for events and industry networks, and a café, auditorium and editing suites designed for public use. Connected to the main campus by a large performance square, Yr Egin will also open up connections and networks for students looking to work in this sector. A vibrant centre and melting pot of creative talent, Yr Egin is set to benefit digital and media companies, UWTSD students and the local community.
Heating is central to creating a comfortable, productive building and working environment. Careful design and selection of the most appropriate, energy-efficient equipment helps maintain whole life heating efficiency, keeping bills low and comfort levels high. And providing energy-saving space heating throughout Yr Egin, feeding underfloor heating, radiators, overdoor heaters and air handling units, are two Remeha Gas 220 Ace boilers.
Keir Construction were appointed as the main contractors on the project with McCann & Partners as the M&E Consultants. David Airey, Lead Mechanical Engineer at McCann & Partners, specified the Remeha Gas 220 Ace boilers as the preferred boiler to meet Part L requirements of building regulations.
“We have specified Remeha boilers on other projects and they have consistently proved reliable,” said David. “Achieving an energy-efficient building was a key requirement. With their high operational efficiencies and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, the Gas 220 Aces also contribute to an improved SBEM rating on the project.”
Narbeths Mechanical Services were the contractors on the project. Glen Narbeth commented: “The Gas 220 Aces were straightforward to install and fitted all the project requirements. The installation went well from delivery to commissioning. The boilers have been up and running for a couple of months now, and we’ve had no problems at all.”
This exciting new venture by UWTSD aims to contribute to the regeneration plans of Carmarthenshire County Council and bring far-reaching social and economic benefits to the region.
The Remeha boilers, which deliver higher than average gross efficiencies of up to 98% and ultra-low Class 6 NOx emissions, are playing a key part in keeping operational costs low while minimising the building’s carbon footprint, in keeping with the wider environmental aims of the project.
Yr Egin was designed by Bristol-based Architects Building Design Partnership (BDP) in collaboration with local practice Rural Office for Architecture.
The iconic structure of the triangular building, which is focused around a public foyer and atrium, has already received the support of the Design Commission for Wales.
Canolfan S4C Yr Egin is due to be part funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal, a £1.3 billion investment in 11 projects across South West Wales.
The Gas 220 Ace is available in a range of outputs from 160kW to 300kW and with cascade options of up to 2,400kW. The Gas 220 Ace has been designed specifically in response to research into customer requirements.
Lightweight and ultra-compact, with top connections and integral wheels for faster, easier installation, it provides a cost-effective solution to increasingly restricted plantroom space and access limitations.
