Marley says BS 5534 revision provides welcome clarification

Marley has welcomed revisions to BS 5534 which have seen it being updated to include the new BS 8612 Dry Fix Standard.

Stuart Nicholson, roof systems director at Marley, comments: “This is the second amendment to BS 5534 since major revisions were introduced in 2014.

"We were expecting to see the inclusion of the new Dry Fix Standard, but it also includes further changes, particularly addressing some concerns about the application of roof underlays. It is important that roofing contractors and specifiers are aware of the extent of the revisions.”

BS 5534:2014 + A2:2018 was published on 28 February 2018, with a four month transition period and will be effective from July 1 2018

Key changes include:

  • The scope has been changed to make it absolutely clear that re-roofing and repairs are covered under BS 5534
  • The scope has also made it clearer regarding old roofs, and especially for historically or architecturally important building that the British Standard may not be appropriate and advise to consult with the local planning authority for repair or replacement on these roofs
  • BS 8612: Dry-fixed ridge, hip and verge systems for slating and tiling – specification, has now been added into BS 5534 along with BS8000-0: Workmanship on construction sites
  • A revised clause concerning temporary weather protection before the installation of the primary roof covering, aimed at protecting underlay exposure to UV light
  • Improved interpretation of the results from the test method for determining the resistance to wind uplift of roof tile clips
  • New definitions for low water vapour resistance (type LR) and air permeable underlays
  • New definitions for continuous and discontinuous ceilings

There are also numerous other minor revisions to BS 5534. For further information, visit the website.
