More than 13,500 new homes were registered to be built in October, according to NHBC's latest new home registration statistics, an increase of 12% compared to a year ago.

A total of 13,583 new homes (10,455 private sector; 3,128 affordable sector) were registered during the month, compared to 12,143 (9,196 private sector; 2,947 affordable sector) in October 2016.

Almost 40,000 new homes were registered during the rolling quarter (August - October), with a total of 39,752 units - a 6% increase on the 37,552 registered at the same time last year.

Over the rolling quarter 31,016 homes were registered in the private sector, representing a 12% increase on the same period a year ago (27,672), with 8,736 new homes registered in the affordable sector, a 12% decrease on 2016 numbers (9,880).

More than half of the 12 UK regions experienced growth in registrations over the rolling quarter, when compared to the same period last year. Scotland (3,079 +41%), East Midlands (3,467 +35%) and North East (2,065 +25%) were among the regions with most notable growth.

As the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, NHBC's registration statistics are a lead indicator of the UK's new homes market. Commenting on October's registrations at the NHBC Annual Lunch held yesterday in Westminster, NHBC Chief Executive Steve Wood said: "After the promising figures reported for the third quarter of 2017, we have continued to see growth across many parts of the UK.

"As ever, the demand for new homes remains strong, so this is clearly encouraging news for the industry and prospective new home buyers as we approach the end of the year."

NHBC UK statistics for August 2017 - October 2017 show that the number of NHBC new home registrations was 39,752 compared to 37,552 in the same period last year. Of these:

  • 31,016 were registered in the private sector, compared to 27,672 in the same period last year.
  • 8,736 were registered in the affordable sector, compared to 9,880 in the same period last year.
