Delta Balustrades has supplied its ‘Duo’, ‘Vista’ and ‘Orbis’ systems for the new £20 million States of Jersey Police headquarters in St Helier.
Designed by IBI Group, the five-storey headquarters building replaces the Channel Island’s previous police HQ, which had been located in a former school and extended with various annexes over time.
The new purpose-built facility, provides improved accommodation, increasing the custody suite from 12 to 20 cells and providing open plan operational support areas, a central control room and a specialist CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) unit.
Balustrades from Delta have been specified throughout internal and external areas of the building, providing a robust solution that meets the needs of the highly secure building and its coastal location.
Delta Balustrades’ ‘Duo’ system has been used for the police headquarters’ feature staircase. Featuring a twin flat baluster, the system has been used with 10mm clear toughened glass and a Sigma polish on the handrails to create a satin finish.
The two remaining staircases have been fitted with Delta Balustrades’ ‘Orbis’ system, with the same specification of toughened glass and stainless steel handrail polish.
For the building’s seven light-well voids, Delta Balustrades’ ‘Vista’ system was specified, offering a solution fabricated from 15mm clear toughened structural glass panels. These were fixed at the base to a pre-installed concrete upstand at the edge of the slab, avoiding the need for uprights, and finished with a 50mm stainless steel handrail.
Externally, the ‘Orbis’ system was used on top of a retaining wall that runs alongside the driveway to the basement delivery area. Incorporating 13.5mm toughened and laminated glass infill panels, the 1.8 metre high balustrades were designed with extensive loading capabilities to address localised windy conditions and 316L marine grade stainless steel to protect against the coastal atmospherics.
The ‘Orbis’ system from Delta Balustrades was also used at the front of the building to create a ‘Mexican wave’ protective barrier at the exit.
The Delta Balustrades team worked closely with the architect to ensure that the balustrade matched the required undulating curve, finishing the safety and aesthetic feature with a mirror-polished 316L stainless steel handrail and 10mm toughened safety glass.
