Increasing calls for clarity on shape of new Government

The wider construction industry has reacted with growing frustration to continued delays in forming the new Government.

After the Conservatives failed to win an overall majority last week, the party entered into protracted negotations with the DUP in Northern Ireland to create a deal to overcome the hung parliament.

With mixed messages from both parties over the weekend, there is mounting concern that the country remains in limbo.

Dr Diana Montgomery, Chief Executive of the CPA, commented: “From a business perspective, this is frustrating. We need certainty and clarity in order to address the serious challenges and opportunities facing UK construction over the next few years.

"First and foremost of which is the prompt delivery of the government’s National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline, which if delivered we believe will attract investment in UK based manufacturing.

"Government also has a leadership role in fixing its own procurement by using its ‘balanced scorecard’ approach to procure best value for government projects and using policy levers to address skills and housing shortages and the costs of energy and business rates to business.

"It’s still early days and we will, of course, be ready to work with the new government and help find solutions, but I fear we’re now facing a period of greater instability at a critical time for our industry.”

Meanwhile RIBA wants to see a quick resolution and for the new Government to begin implementing the proposals it developed in the run-up to the election.

RIBA President Jane Duncan said: “The Conservative manifesto made the link between housing, infrastructure and good design in creating better communities and, quite rightly, recognised the absolutely vital role that architects play in improving lives. We will continue to reinforce this message with the new Conservative led Government.

“The forthcoming Brexit negotiations make this a particularly critical time for our sector, presenting challenges as well as opportunities for architects. The RIBA has been consistent and clear about our priorities: we must have access to the best talent from around the world, and mutual recognition of our members qualifications across the EU in order that the sector can continue to thrive.

“The RIBA will continue to serve as a strong voice for architects and calls on the UK Government to provide confidence and stability to our sector as the country adapts over the forthcoming weeks, months and years.”
