Located in Poplar, right in the heart of London, Our Lady & St Joseph's Catholic Primary School was formed in 2014 when Our Lady Catholic Primary School and Holy Family Catholic Primary School merged.
Part of the school construction and to celebrate the merger, it was decided that the school logo would be detailed in the school entrance yard. The logo is a very intricate design, and as a result meant Dural and SureSet had to use their skill and experience to transfer this level of detail into the flooring design.
An emblem created with form and function
Designed by Green Tea Architects, the detailed and vibrant logo was inspired by the historic Catholic presence in Poplar as well as the local history. To transfer the logo onto the school yard entrance meant a unique solution had to be found.
SureSet and Dural were approached as to achieve the detailed design meant resin bound flooring was the best option to use. Dural’s Durosol Formable Aluminium Profiles were specified along with SureSet’s resin bound paving range Spectrum®.
Dural’s Formable Aluminium Profiles offered developers a beautiful and high quality edge protection for the resin bound flooring. It is easily formed into the desired shape of the school’s logo and no special tools were required for the process. It took three days to lay the 130m of edging. The Durosol Aluminium Profiles offered a neat, durable egde protection for SureSet’s resin paving.
SureSet’s Spectrum® range of resin bound paving was specified, as not only does it provide a durable, hard-wearing surface that will withstand heavy footfall, but also gives the developers complete confidence in being able to match the vibrant eleven colours used in the school emblem. SureSet develop their own range of colouring glass for the Spectrum® range to offer the highest colour consistency and exacting standards. A total area of 64m2 was laid in a 3mm thickness.
Resin bound paving – the advantages
The popularity of resin bound paving is becoming increasingly popular in commercial build projects, as it offers Architects and Developers the option to create extremely durable surfaces with beautiful aesthetics to match. So the resin flooring can satisfy clients’ requirements for stunning, seamless flooring while ensuring it is fit for purpose, hard-wearing and will stand the test of time.
Resin bound paving is formed when natural aggregate is combined with resin, and forms an extremely durable surface. It is an ideal surface for areas which endure heavy loadings e.g. high footfall, cars, and is virtually impossible for cracks or displacement to occur.
Another important consideration for Architects and Developers is that resin bound surfaces are fully permeable and compliant with the requirements of Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), which was introduced in 2011 to better manage water run off in urban areas. This means water is able to drain effectively through the surface back into the ground to prevent any build up of surface water.
Project conclusion
Our Lady Catholic Primary School and Holy Family Catholic Primary School were pleased with their entrance to the school. The logo design transferred immaculately to the school yard flooring, and now provides a vibrant, decorative and hard-wearing entrance that the school is proud of.
