For the building of an artistic and contemporary aparthotel in the heart of Edinburgh’s thriving cultural district, architects required a roof which offered the optimum waterproof protection as well as the aesthetic properties to compliment an existing Listed façade. Sika-Trocal’s full turnkey solution, incorporating the high-quality Type S system membrane and Innofix insulation, proved more than suitable for the challenge.
The Aparthotel Adagio Royal Mile is an imaginative and inspiring addition to Edinburgh’s city centre. The six-storey building comprises 146 apartments, a breakfast room and guest facilities such as a business corner, laundry room and lounge spaces.
Allan Murray Architects, in conjunction with main contractors, McAleer and Rushe, specified Sika-Trocal Type S to provide the roof with the ultimate waterproof protection. Suitable for mechanically fastened roofs in both new build and refurbishment applications, Sika-Trocal Type S is generally regarded as the most rapid and economic system to install.
A total of 1,400m2 of membrane was applied to the aparthotel’s roof which featured a standing seam. The unreinforced nature of Type S membrane offers exceptional malleability and allows high quality detailing works to be completed to an exceptional standard.
Sika-Trocal’s foil-faced INNOfix 140mm insulation, provided by partner supplier Building Innovation, was also installed. INNOfix and tissue-faced INNObond are high performance rigid thermoset polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulants manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). They are available in a wide range of thicknesses.
Through the specification of both Sika-Trocal insulation and membrane products for this project, sub-contractor Single Ply Services received the benefits of ‘one stop shop’ purchasing from Sika – including fewer site deliveries, no time lost awaiting product deliveries and the reassurance that materials would be with them as planned.
Rob Burgoyne, Contracts Director at Single Ply Services, said: “The Sika Type S system offers exceptional malleability, which was ideal as the project included a fair amount of parapet details. Its look was also vital, as it needed to interface with an Edinburgh stone-style surface, as well as zinc, and glazed curtain-walling.
“Sika Type S offers superb flexibility and waterproof protection. It’s also incredibly easy to work with. It enabled us to complete a potentially challenging project in rapid time.”
Offering exceptional waterproofing, durability and a simple installation process, the cold-applied Type S is approved by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) to have a life expectancy of up to 35 years.
In addition to the Type S installation, Sika’s SGmA single-ply membrane was applied to several balconies at the aparthotel. The system was overlaid with ballast to enable its use as a trafficked or leisure area whilst providing excellent sound insulation and resistance to ageing.
Completed over an eight-month period, the innovative and high quality application of Type S and SGmA single ply membranes from Sika-Trocal ensured the ‘cool’, contemporary Adagio Aparthotel opened in time for the festive season. Thanks to Sika-Trocal’s exemplary roof system, whatever the weather brings in the new year, guests will be safe in the knowledge their stylish aparthotel is fully-protected against the worst of the elements.
