Glazing is central in iconic refurbishment

Designing and installing a new five storey atrium and roof light in keeping with its Grade II listed art deco surroundings was just one of the challenges met by GLASSOLUTIONS as part of ISG’s £30million refurbishment of the iconic Adelphi Building on London’s Victoria Embankment.

The UK’s leading glass processing company worked closely with architects Aukett Swanke and the main contractors as part of the expert team rejuvenating one of London’s most important art deco structures. GLASSOLUTIONS and the architect had successfully teamed up previously on the refurbishment of 123 Victoria Street in London.

ISG secured the contract with global investment firm Blackstone to remodel and refurbish floors one to six of the iconic building to create 190,000 sq ft of high spec CAT A open plan office accommodation. Effective project management was a key to the success of the scheme, given that the building remained partly occupied and in use throughout.

The work involved significant structural alterations to upgrade and sensitively modernise the building, including the reinstatement of internal light wells to maximise the volume of natural light entering the structure at lower levels.

The GLASSOLUTIONS team completed the complex £1million interior and exterior glazing project within just 20 weeks, using a range of glazing options within the Schueco window and curtain walling system.

Bespoke engineered glass solutions, including challenging deflection tolerances were required to deliver the glazing specification within the listed building. Externally, the building’s existing smoked glass windows have been replaced with high performance clear glass units featuring a range of glass including Planidur COOL-LITE SKN165, Security HST Toughened Planitherm Ultra N on outer panes of sealed units and Stadip Protect laminated on inner panes. Where fire rated glass was required GLASSOLUTIONS used a combination of Securit Planitherm Total+ and 25mm Contraflam 60 on inner panes.

Within the atrium, and for the screens and doors at ground floor level, Stadip Silence clear toughened HST acoustic laminate was used to deliver Rw 41dB acoustic performance.

Where the building steps in at level six, a new landscaped roof terrace area overlooking the reinstated glazed light wells has been created featuring glazed balustrading using GLASSOLUTIONS SGG security glazing with handrail.

Says GLASSOLUTIONS’ business manager, Eamonn Tobin: “Complex projects like the scheme at The Adelphi Building require a combination of an appropriate product range, technical expertise, excellent team working and first class project management. At GLASSOLUTIONS we have again demonstrated that by providing this blend we are first choice for high profile projects across the UK.”
