Sika Liquid Plastics has been given a lead role in a roofing project at Pinewood Studios in Cardiff.
The brand’s Sikalastic 625 cold-applied liquid roofing membrane will be applied to the building’s 16,000 m² profiled metal roof deck as a replacement to the existing single-ply system which had become vulnerable due to standing water.
With 6,500 m² of shooting space, the building is home to high profile TV series such as Sherlock.
Roofing contractor, Central Roofing, has been tasked with the installation, which is expected to take 20 weeks to complete.
The refurbishment programme will be delivered in sections, working around filming periods and will completely encapsulate the roof to protect it from future water ingress.
Steve Cookson, technical services manager at Sika Liquid Plastics, said: “The existing membrane used to waterproof the gutters had been sealed using bracing pieces that had created dams along the gutter line, causing ponding of standing water up to 30mm deep. This not only made the membrane vulnerable to failure but also increased the weight loading on the roof.
“There were also issues with detailing, roof penetrations and the installation integrity of the existing membrane used for the perimeter gutter, so Sikalastic 625 was specified to provide a seamless, durable and weather-resistant waterproofing system.
“With the added bonus of being cold applied with no need for hot works, it’ll be a no mess, no fuss solution for Pinewood Studios that’ll enable the facility to remain fully operational during installation.”
Dave Alden from Central Roofing added: “We have been using Sika Liquid Plastics for around 20 years and, as an approved contractor, we benefit greatly from the company’s input during specification and technical inspections during the programme, so we can jointly ensure that the roof remains watertight…whatever the Welsh weather throws at it.”
