What started as a small workshop has turned into an on-going design event at British Ceramic Tile’s London Hub in Clerkenwell.
The company enjoyed a fantastic response to it’s most recent ‘Design a Tile’ workshop which ran to celebrate the creation of the new London showroom.
The local A&D community turned out in force to try their hand at tile design, with some stand out results. Challenged with creating their own unique tile design, participants were given a plaster block and invited to open up their imaginations carving a pattern that would then be recreated on a glass tile at British Ceramic Tile’s Head Office.

Under the expert guidance of Georgina Kipling, British Ceramic Tile’s glass development technician, the plaster blocks were turned into a mould and fired in the kiln with flat glass tiles, before being hand decorated with metallic paint to bring the design to life.
Georgina said: “The results were impressive with designs showing some real flair and understanding of popular interior design trends. For many of us, design is about cutting-edge technology and state of the art equipment, but with this workshop we were able to turn back time and return to the tile design of old, carving out designs in moulds and transferring them to tiles.”
Dave Richards, specification marketing manager for British Ceramic Tile, added: “The workshop was a success with the A&D community and is an event we will look to extend. It linked well with the stunning glass tiles displays created by Giles Miller for our launch but also communicates our long established heritage of manufacturing ceramic and glass tiles using the local raw materials and expert craftsmanship. You never know some of these designs might be making their way into our collection one day soon.”
British Ceramic Tile will be running a series of design workshops at the London Hub. A base for the company’s dedicated specification team, the London Hub provides a dedicated space for architects and designers in the area, offering a large, versatile workshop area for research purposes or client meetings, an enclosed meeting room, and interactive trend wall for inspiration.
