At the £2.5 million Heritage Lottery Funded revitalisation of Bentley Park in Doncaster, a range of concrete repair and protection systems from Sika have been applied as part of a sympathetic restoration to bring the ageing Pavilion back to its former glory.
Built in 1931 under the Miners Welfare Scheme, the pavilion required a complete overhaul as part of a community project managed by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to transform Bentley Park.
The 30 week programme of works by main contractor William Anelay included concrete repairs to the existing structure and façade, new roof coverings, extension to the rear, internal configuration of steel columns and beams, and new windows and doors.
Specialist contractor JDF Restoration Ltd was appointed to carry out structural improvements to the landmark building. With the pavilion showing signs of spalling and weak concrete, and with a number of ornate corners, columns and mouldings that had to be reformed, Sika offered a quick, strong and reliable range of solutions that could repair and protect the concrete without any further damage.
“We were appointed to repair the concrete structure back to its original profile whilst maintaining the existing details,” explains Adam Gobbett, Contracts Manager at JDF Restoration. “After blasting some areas of the concrete to remove old coatings and expose the substructure, we applied the Sika concrete repair and protection system.”
JDF Restoration applied Sika Monotop – a cementitious system which consists of polymer modified mortars – to smooth out the imperfections and to provide a cost effective solution ready for overcoating. With a good resistance to water and chloride penetration, it will help to protect any exposed elements of the concrete substructure from future damage.
An overall layer of Sika Ferrogard 903 was then applied to penetrate the concrete and provide a protective layer around the structure’s steel reinforcement. Sikagard-675W was then applied to aesthetically enhance the concrete substrate and provide a high quality yet economical water-based, acrylic coating to protect against weathering and ageing.
