Leading British carpet manufacturer, Newhey Carpets, recently manufactured over 950 square metres of uniquely designed carpets as part of a huge renovation project at the Ibis Styles, Edinburgh Centre St Andrew Square hotel.
The choice of carpets and designs were influenced by the significant history of Scotland including the landscape, famous authors and poets.
With over 40 years of experience and technical expertise Newhey specialises in the design and manufacture of contract carpets for the hotel, leisure and entertainment sectors and worked closely with ICA Interiors on this major renovation project.
The building, which once housed the office of Scottish Life Assurance, is located in the heart of Edinburgh in St Andrew Square opposite Harvey Nichols, making the hotel an ideal base for shopping, visiting the bars and experiencing the renowned Scottish single malt. The newly transformed hotel has 103 guestrooms separated over six floors. Newhey created complete bespoke carpet designs for the guestrooms, corridors and lobby areas with the theme of Scottish culture and location.
Two colourways were selected for the guestrooms, one from amethyst, pink, purple and lime while the second palette contained earthier shades of terracotta, yellow and green. Both were woven from 80% wool and 20% nylon with 1,250 grams per square metre. These contemporary tartan inspired carpet designs with vivid colours vary throughout the hotel in order to show that each guestroom floor reflects a different iconic literary mind such as Robert Burns and Walter Scott.
Kim Vass, Interior Designer at ICA Interiors commented: “As part of this major project we worked closely with Newhey Carpets to put together a selection of contemporary designs for the guestrooms, corridors and lobby rugs.
"These were carefully matched with a collection of vibrant colours which vary throughout different areas of the hotel. We successfully achieved the desired theme of Scottish literary heroes and poets and this is sure to provide guests with a unique and memorable hotel experience. The product is also manufactured with Newhey’s revolutionary evobac secondary backing, produced from 100% recycled materials which make it incredibly environmentally friendly.”
Colours from the Scottish landscape were incorporated into the corridor design and exclusive textured effects were created from the unique Colortec+ tufting technology. Stipple yarns added a greater depth and luxurious appearance; this matched with carefully chosen Scottish slang offers a brief insight into the local environment and lingo. The thistle, the emblem of Scotland, was tastefully incorporated with tartan on the luxurious 1,600 grams per square metre lobby rugs. Twist and stipple yarns in a tartan design helped to create the theme of Scottish history and added to the quality of the rug, providing a grand feel.
Scottish inspired carpet was carefully constructed using Newhey’s innovative Colortec+ range. Colortec+ was selected as the perfect solution for the Ibis Styles hotel as it is one of the most advanced forms of high speed patterned tufting technology available today. Utilising computer yarn placement technology it provides the ability to specify complex designs not usually associated with tufted carpets. Not only did Colortec+ enable totally unique designs, it also provided an excellent cost effective and durable solution for the hotel.
Bright, energetic and contemporary with a twist of Scottish heritage now perfectly describes the Ibis Styles hotel in Edinburgh City Centre, St Andrews Square.
