Laidlaw Ironmongery’s range of anti-ligature door furniture reduces the risk of self-harm in buildings used by those vulnerable to mental health issues and provides specifiers with sympathetically designed and innovative ironmongery solutions.
Laidlaw Ironmongery’s broad range of anti-ligature products includes door closing and access devices that can be selected in a variety of combinations.
Each product is designed with soft, rounded shapes that reduce ligature points but avoid the harsh institutional appearance often associated with such hardware, making them ideal for mental health buildings, prisons and courts.
It is critical the most appropriate ironmongery is used in high-risk spaces in mental health buildings such as bedrooms and en-suites. This is where Laidlaw Ironmongery’s experience in this sector is so valuable, giving it the expertise to help specifiers identify which products are right for each application.
Laidlaw Ironmongery has successfully supplied its anti-ligature hardware to projects across the country. For example the £27million Ferndene Children and Young People’s Centre in Prudhoe, Northumberland, specified its stainless steel door furniture because it matched the brief to create a modern and safe facility that emphasised the dignity of the patients.
David Davies of project architects Medical Architecture said: “A key design driver was to create a series of buildings for children and young people that were not only safe and secure, but also domestic and homely in order to avoid creating an institutional feel. Laidlaw Ironmongery's role in this process became one of great importance as we worked from concept to construction, notably in finalising the detail of key fixtures and fittings, such as door furniture in and around patient activity and living spaces.”
In order to remain at the forefront of anti-ligature innovation Laidlaw Ironmongery is always looking to improve its range and recently added the AL3S secondary barricade override. The product’s secondary override mechanism is accessed by removing just one anti-tamper screw and allows staff to bypass the lock mechanism from outside a room. This means they can effectively disable the lock even if it is being held by the handle or the key has broken off in the cylinder.
Laidlaw Ironmongery’s anti-ligature range can also be incorporated into Leaderflush Shapland’s integrated doorset concept to create integrated anti-ligature performance doorsets.
The doors and frames are precisely machined in a controlled factory environment to incorporate the anti-ligature hardware. This means specifiers can be sure every component is fit for purpose, while Leaderflush Shapland’s in-house testing capability puts it in a position to deliver on all future CE marking requirements.
