Products supplied by Aggregate Industries’ commercial hard landscaping division have helped transform Twickenham’s town centre as part of an £8 million investment programme ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
The plans included the regeneration of the town centre to make it more attractive and pedestrian-friendly for a town with the sporting heritage that Twickenham boasts.
With Charcon having previously supplied Willow Buff UK Natural Yorkstone in Richmond, the product’s distinct blend of buffs and greys was the Borough Council’s preferred stone and it was keen to use this product in Twickenham.
The first phase of the regeneration included repaving areas of York Street, King Street and London Road, widening footways by up to 1.5 metres in some areas to reduce the dominance of traffic. Charcon supplied 8,500m2 of Willow Buff Natural Yorkstone, creating an attractive paving solution, contributing to the wider regeneration of the town centre and enhancing the townscape for pedestrians and cyclists.
Charcon also supplied a further 888m2 of Granite paving in Church Street replacing the existing paving, as well as a Granite sett road surface.
Mike Davies, Major Projects and Specifications Manager at Aggregate Industries, comments: “The town of Twickenham is synonymous with English Rugby Union. Its world famous 82,000 seater stadium is hosting ten games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, including the final itself, and huge crowds of rugby fans are heading to the town throughout September and October.
“Yet rugby is not the only draw for visitors to Twickenham. The town is the second largest shopping area in the London Borough of Richmond. Key retail areas include King Street, London Road and York Street, with the paved Church Street home to a range of independent shops.
“We were very excited to be involved in this project. Charcon has a successful history of supplying materials to Richmond Borough Council, thanks to our quality products, unique laying patterns, and our reliability to produce and deliver to site. These attributes were once again displayed throughout the whole scheme in Twickenham, delivering on time and within budget.”
Completion of the Twickenham town centre project is expected in June 2016.
