Beacon Heights regeneration scheme brings new affordable homes to Bodmin

The Leadbitter Group has completed 60 new affordable homes in Bodmin as part of a major town centre regeneration scheme.

The Beacon Heights development at Northey Road includes 40 homes for affordable rent and 20 for shared ownership, as well as a further 33 homes for private sale, all of which meet Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The energy efficiency of the homes will help to reduce energy bills and carbon emissions.

Beacon Heights is a joint venture between Cornwall Council, Devon & Cornwall Housing group, Westco Properties and the Leadbitter Group. The scheme was part-funded by the Homes and Community Agency, which invested £3,002,000 to enable the delivery of this level of affordable housing.

The scheme was designed to improve the area’s desirability, giving pedestrians priority over traffic throughout. As well as a mix of house types and tenures, it includes improved parking provision and a better entrance to the road to create an attractive street scene. A new play area will also be completed.

Charlie Scherer, Regional Director of Leadbitter’s West and Wales Housing division, said: “This community project has provided much needed affordable accommodation for local people and greatly improved facilities in the area. As with all Leadbitter developments, we undertook extensive consultation with residents before work began and a great deal of care was taken to cause as little disruption as possible to the local community during construction.”

Jon Julian, Senior Development Officer at Devon & Cornwall Housing group, said: “The project is a great example of the work that Devon & Cornwall Housing group does in the area.

“The new homes have transformed the area by combining high-quality design with a street layout that is much more pedestrian-friendly.

“The shared ownership homes are allowing 20 local families to get on the housing ladder, whilst the homes for rent have provided local people with secure, affordable tenancies in warm, energy-efficient homes.”
