Battersea deal powers Skanska to top of contractor leagues

A £600 million contract for phase two of the Battersea Power Station regeneration scheme has helped propel Skanska to the top of the Glenigan contractor league table for January.

The contractor was appointed on the project in October last year after beating off competition from Balfour Beatty, Lend Lease and Mace, however the contract with Battersea Power Station Development Company was not signed until last month (Glenigan Project ID: 13109360).

The deal is the centrepiece of a seven-contract £ 860.1 million monthly haul for Skanska, which also includes a shared £400 million contract to redevelop Waterloo station for Network Rail (Glenigan Project ID: 11026152).

Bouygues, which shares the Waterloo contract with Skanska, dropped to second place after netting eight deals worth £255.1 million. Wates moved up two places to round off the top three after securing 12 contracts, including a £180 million office project in Paddington for British Land (Glenigan Project ID: 09351662).

Balfour Beatty’s share of a £65.5 million bypass project at Caernarfon for the Welsh Assembly is one of 11 deals which have helped the contractor move up eight places to reach the top ten (Glenigan Project ID: 91400809).

Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor are a new entry just outside of the top ten, with a £160 million biomass centre project for joint clients, while 14th place sitters Mace have a £100 million job to build 60-70 St Mary Axe, aka the Can of Ham, for TIAA Henderson Real Estate (Glenigan Project ID: 08376348).

Skanska’s fast start to the year has helped it soar 12 places up in the annual contractor league table to reach the third spot, with Kier and Balfour Beatty non-movers in first and second position.

The Battersea deal has also seen Malaysian property development giant SP Setia and Sime Darby go straight in at the top of the latest monthly client table, while the Department of Health remains on pole position in the annual table.

Elsewhere in this month’s contractor leagues, Gardiner & Theobald has moved up seven places to top the quantity surveyor table after winning six deals worth £806.3 million. Mott MacDonald climbed 14 places to take the number one spot in the consulting engineers table, while Ian Simpson leads the list of top 20 architects.

Glenigan league tables are produced from comprehensive UK construction activity data and provide a snapshot of contractor performance over a 12-month period. Projects are tracked to completion on site by Glenigan researchers, who make over one million phone calls per year to provide timely, robust data.
