It was all aboard for a group of Midlands-based architects on a historical treasure hunt of the Birmingham’s architectural aces. More than 40 of the region’s architects joined Wienerberger for an open top bus tour of the city’s architectural landmarks.
Led by architectural historian Alan Griffiths, the tour guided the group around some of the most famous and lesser known architectural wonders ranging from the Victorian grandeur of the Victoria Law Courts to the futuristic facade of the Bullring.
Alan Gordon, specification team director at Wienerberger, said: “Birmingham is a city with a fine architectural legacy, showcasing the very best in Georgian, Victorian and contemporary building design. The aim of the tour was not only a chance for the architectural community to meet, share ideas and voice their architectural likes and dislikes, but also an opportunity to celebrate one of the UK’s most striking architectural landscapes.
“The event wasn’t just about bricks and blocks, but architecture in its entirety regardless of material. The tour proved to be a fantastic success and the feedback we received from attendees was wholly positive. We’re now looking at extending the open top bus tours to other cities around the UK.”
James Bavin, who attended the event from the Davis Weatherill Partnership, added: “It was a very enjoyable afternoon - made even better by the late summer sunshine. The tour was very interesting, highlighting buildings I was not even aware that existed, despite having worked in the city for a number of years.”
