Uponor toughens up pre-insulated pipe accessory range to meet market demand

Uponor has launched a new range of insulation sets for pre-insulated pipe joints capable of a mechanical load capacity of 60 tonnes.

The latest offering provides customers with greater strength, improved thermal efficiency in areas typically prone to heat loss, and better resistance to water ingress.

The improved fittings are being introduced to supplement Uponor’s market leading pre-insulated pipe system, which is seeing unprecedented demand from installers looking for an efficient pipe system in small scale district heating schemes involving biomass boilers, heat pumps or combined heat and power (CHP) plants.

Specifically designed to protect buried underground joint areas from heat loss and external forces, Uponor’s latest insulation sets are available as tees, elbows and straights.

The range is 50 per cent more efficient at heat retention and has a load bearing capacity of 60 tonnes – equal to the static strength of the pre-insulated pipe – meaning it is suitable for use under roads and other paved surfaces.

Additionally, the new products are certified to resist flood and ground water ingress, a key consideration given the recent wet winter.

The new sets all cover three outer jacket dimensions (200/175/140) and are suitable for both twin and single pre-insulated pipes. Each set also includes reducer rings, bolts, sealing kit, and full instructions.

Chris Brown, an expert in local heat distribution at Uponor comments: “”With the growing trend of multiple buildings supplied from a single heat source, be it a biomass boiler, a heat pump, CHP or even a conventional boiler, there will always be a requirement for underground buried joints in district heating networks.

"These joints have typically been an area for heat loss so we have increased the efficiency of our insulation sets to combat this as we are constantly looking for ways to provide our customers with better solutions.”

Chris continues: “Some insulation sets on the market require the installer to physically mix two liquid chemicals together, which react to create an insulation foam that is then injected into the joint area within the set.

"It’s simply not realistic to expect installers to do this on site where the outcome can be variable dependent on physical and climatic conditions. Uponor insulation sets are lined with factory moulded PUR foam so the uniformity of the insulation can be guaranteed.”
