Windows from JELD-WEN, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of timber windows, have been specified for the refurbishment of a landmark historic pub to meet strict conservation-area planning requirements.
A local developer with a particular interest in architectural conservation, has restored the former Crossing Gate public house in Liss, Hampshire, which dates from the mid 19th century, back to its former glory.
Two stunning homes were created by converting the original pub and three further new Victorian-style cottages were built in the grounds. The public house, once the heart of this lovely rural village, had closed in recent years and fallen into a derelict state and required considerable restoration.
JELD-WEN’s Regency Stormsure windows, with an authentic vertical bar design, were specified to meet the planning conditions in this picturesque area, which now forms part of the new South Downs National Park.
The developer said: “The windows had to tick all the boxes of the local authority conservationists in terms of style and construction, as well as conforming to some extremely high noise-reduction stipulations.
“The Regency Stormsure range from JELD-WEN provided the perfect solution and the effect is quite stunning. These comments are reflected in the development attracting huge acclaim locally and seemingly being earmarked for a number of architectural awards.”
The new windows were the perfect complement to the large building, which incorporates a classic double-fronted Victorian façade, with two bays. The overall look to both the conversion and new build cottages provides real impact, with alternating pale blue and light yellow paint finishes on the rendered exteriors, chosen from an early Victorian colour palette.
All five dwellings were supplied with the same style of white timber windows, supplied to JELD-WEN’s hi-build factory finish to provide a superior appearance and enhance their longevity. They also met high thermal performance requirements, achieving a U value of 1.4 W/m2K.
The Crossing Gate pub, which at the turn of the century was known as the Station Hotel, is recognised by many as a highly visible landmark building, sitting adjacent to the main London to Portsmouth railway line. This small and exclusive finished development has proved hugely popular with buyers, with all properties selling off-plan before construction and restoration were even halfway completed.
Richard Lane, Sales Specialist at JELD-WEN, said: “It is great to be involved in a conservation project where, apart from meeting all the planning and performance requirements, you can materially contribute to returning a piece of England’s heritage back to its rightful position as the centre-piece of a village.”
All JELD-WEN windows benefit from full Chain of Custody certification, which means they originate from well managed forests with strict reforestation programmes and therefore further enhances the sustainability of the properties.
