ICE West Midlands has announced that an 11th site has now joined their ‘This is Civil Engineering’ campaign - an innovative national initiative to build public awareness of the civil engineering which is all around them.
Telford & Wrekin Council are spearheading the £250 million Southwater scheme to transform Telford Town Centre, and it is picking up pace with new buildings rising up. Southwater One is the flagship building housing the new library and council customer service teams. The scheme also includes a new cinema, a hotel, a new lake, and an urban beach.
Contractor Morgan Sindall, who are building Southwater One, the lake and urban beach, are supporting the campaign by displaying 'This is Civil Engineering’ banners on their site. The campaign involves banners being displayed at prominent locations ensuring that members of the public will be made aware of the key infrastructure work which is being delivered by civil engineers. It is hoped that people will scan the banner QR code to visit the campaign web site to learn more.
Jeff Boothroyd from Morgan Sindall, who is the project manager for Southwater One, said: "Working alongside the ICE we hope to inspire a new generation of engineers and encourage the local community to find out more about our investments in the local area. The ‘This is Civil Engineering’ campaign also supports our commitment to bringing new people into the industry via our apprenticeships programme. At Morgan Sindall, we believe that our industry has much to offer, giving our workers an interesting, challenging, and rewarding career. Our apprenticeships demonstrate the importance we place in attracting, developing and retaining talent.
Steve Feeley, ICE West Midlands Regional Director, thanked Morgan Sindall for continuing to support the ‘This is Civil Engineering’ campaign and said: “This is an exciting initiative which encourages people to learn more about the civil engineering which is going on around them and improving their lives. We hope that many more organisations in the region will join the campaign and spread the word.”
Other banners marking exciting civil engineering projects in our region have been unveiled at Birmingham New Street Station; Severn Trent works in Birmingham city centre; Staffordshire Jaguar Landrover i54 site; Birmingham Airport A45 new road; and the Tame Valley flood defence scheme.
