Still going strong after a decade

Leading roofing manufacturer Marley Eternit is celebrating the 10th anniversary of one of its most popular tiles – the Edgemere interlocking slate.

Still going strong after 10 years, the Edgemere design was one of the first concrete tiles on the market launched to meet specifier demand for thinner, flatter roofing solutions. Its clean and precise slate-like appearance is enhanced by the thin leading edge and broken-bond laying technique.

Charlotte Hughes, campaign manager at Marley Eternit, said: “While traditional concrete tiles can appear less than streamlined, our Edgemere tiles challenge this as the thin leading edge reduces the perceived thickness when installed and are designed to minimise the appearance of the interlock. They are also lighter in weight as they use 25% less raw material than a standard concrete tile.”

The tiles are suitable for a range of applications and, for example, were recently used on the roofs of 110 new homes in a housing development near Sunderland. The developers specified Marley Eternit’s Edgemere tiles as they required a durable tile that would also work in conjunction with integrated solar panels and surface-mounted PV panels. They chose to specify a mixture of the Old English Dark Red and Smooth Grey colourways to ensure the roofs didn’t have a uniform appearance and these finishes complemented the existing roofing in the surrounding residential area.

Edgemere slates are a great alternative to natural slate where specifiers are looking for an economical option that still provides the aesthetic benefits of a slate tile. Hughes continued: “As they are machine-made, their consistent size and shape saves time as no sorting or grading is required. Produced in the UK, Edgemere slates also receive an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification.”

Suitable for a range of applications and available in three colours, Marley Eternit’s Edgemere slates are also capable of being installed at pitches as low as 17.5°, giving specifiers maximum flexibility. They are also compatible with a range of dry fix ventilation systems including a bespoke dry verge available from Marley Eternit.
