An intelligent material, LC SmartGlass has the ability to change from translucent to opaque at the switch of a button by using a minute electrical current. A striking design option for modern day healthcare environments it brings instant privacy to medical environments such as theatres, x-ray suites and wards. Various configurations can be supplied including colour tinted, fire rated, x-ray proof, double or triple glazed, curved and shaped.
Either used as wall panels, internal doors and windows, x-ray screens, room dividers or mobile isolation screens, LC SmartGlass offers the patient dignity and privacy while allowing hospital staff to safely and efficiently review patient wellbeing. The SmartGlass medical solution offers a sheer, easily cleaned (wipeable) surface to replace traditional blind systems which can be difficult to clean and high risk in terms of harbouring dirt and bugs.
SPD SmartGlass differs from LC SmartGlass in that it can be manually or automatically “tuned” to control the amount of light and glare passing through a window. While glass is a favoured product for use in building facades; glare, solar heat gain and UV exposure are problematic and can often make the use of glass impractical, resulting in the need to invest in expensive solar shading devices. The ability to instantly switch the glass to reflect the needs of the patient is both a valuable and unique quality of SPD-SmartGlass.
SmartGlass was recently contracted by Planet Partitioning North to provide innovative partitioning for the new wing of the Royal Sunderland Hospital. The Integrated CCU was to include high-dependency single bed units, isolation and post-operation units. In such a delicate environment extra care must be taken to protect those who are at their most vulnerable to infection.
