SAINT-GOBAIN unveils SageGlass at BAU 2013 in Munich

SAGE, the world’s leading manufacturer of dynamic glass for windows, skylights and curtain walls, is demonstrating at this year’s BAU giving visitors the opportunity to see at first hand its electronically tintable glass and impact on glare and solar heat management.

SAGE is entering the European market of sustainable building design, equipped with 10 years of customer experience in the USA together with the leadership position of Saint-Gobain. The manufacturer will use BAU as the European launch for the first public showing of SageGlass following its acquisition by market leader Saint-Gobain.

SageGlass is electronically tintable dynamic glass for windows, skylights and curtain walls that tints or clears to modulate light, solar heat gain and glare. Rather than using conventional sun controls such as motorised window shades, blinds and louvres that tend to block sunlight and views, SageGlass provides a solution that enhances occupant comfort and enables unobstructed views of the outdoors. It can change the visible light transmission and solar heat gain in a room at the push of a button or automatically via the SageGlass proprietary control system or a building automation system. The unique patented technology also offers a superior performance in switching time and increases a building’s value.

“BAU will be a terrific opportunity to showcase SageGlass’s impact on daylight and sun heat for the first time to the German market,” said Kirk Ratzel, Director of Marketing and Sales, SAGE SAINT-GOBAIN Europe.

“We will be demonstrating to BAU visitors the unique properties of SageGlass that are perfect for the European market. We are excited to offer customers the chance to come and see the technology for themselves to better understand how SageGlass can help optimise the comfort and productivity of a building’s occupants. By adjusting electronically the level of tint, SageGlass allows the control of daylight and solar heat, therefore maximising occupant comfort and energy efficiency.”

SageGlass glazing level of tint can be dynamically controlled between 62% and up to 2% of light transmittance while always being transparent so that building occupants have an unobstructed view of the outdoors. Providing 2% of light transmittance is the only way to protect building occupants from direct sun glare without using mechanical shades. SageGlass opens new design opportunities for architects and building owners to create more comfortable living spaces and productive working environments while getting rid of standard shading solutions and maximising the energy efficiency of the building.

This is achieved because SageGlass tint also manages the solar heat with a g value varying from 0.42 in its clearest state to 0.05 in the darkest state (values for a DGU with a Ug value of 1.1 W/m2.k). Controlled by SageGlass dedicated automatic control system, the tint will adapt automatically to the outdoor luminance and therefore will enable a unique energy efficient and comfortable solution for buildings.
