Ensign system is first at Glasgow crime scene

The acclaimed Ensign soil and rainwater system from iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading materials group Saint-Gobain, has been installed at the new multi-million pound Scottish Crime Campus at Gartcosh, Glasgow.

The project, which is due for completion in October this year, is one of a number now under construction as part of the re-generation of the old Gartcosh steel works.

Ensign soil was specified by consulting engineer Wallace Whittle for the basement and the ground floor drainage for Scotland’s new state of the art CSI unit. The main contractor is Graham Construction and the Ensign system has been supplied by Ashworth from Bellshill and installed by FES.

The £82m facility seeks to bring together the full range of Scotland’s crime-busting organisations including The Serious Organised Crime Agency, The Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, The Crown Office Procurator Fiscal’s Services and The Scottish Police Services Authority Forensic Services. The main building will primarily provide specialised, flexible office accommodation as well as forensic science laboratories and additional support facilities.

Jim Burns of Saint-Gobain PAM UK says: “Our Ensign fit-and-forget system is the most versatile cast iron system on the market. A major contributing factor to its specification by Wallace Whittle was its resistance to fire. Furthermore, because it is cast iron, it was considered to be the best system to meet tough security requirements as well as being resilient to accidental damage.

Ensign comprises pipes and fittings from 50-600mm diameter for above ground applications and 100, 150-600mm diameter for below ground. The system can be connected by cast iron mechanical joints or push-fit joints for both above and below ground applications.

Allowing total interchangeability, Ensign is ideal where the ability to ‘fit and forget’ is a priority, such as under large commercial buildings and for installations in unstable ground.
