John Brash has congratulated the British team which swept the board in the recent 23rd World Championship for Young Roofers using its JB-RED factory-graded battens.
In particular, the company was delighted to see Matthew Timby win the gold medal as he had previously worked at John Brash’s Lincolnshire-based production unit.
John Brash, the UK’s leading manufacturer of roofing battens, scaffold boards, shingles & shakes and anti-slip decking, donated its BS 5534:2003+A1:2010 factory-graded JB-RED battens for use during the competition. JB-RED is now the preferred choice of roofing professionals who are looking for a quality roofing batten that requires no additional grading on site.
The bi-annual competition is organised by the International Federation for the Roofing Trade (IFD) and took place during its 58th Congress, which was hosted by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) in Belfast during November.
The aim is to celebrate excellence in the industry and showcase the skills of young roofers. Two-person teams of roofers supported by an industry mentor, work on specially constructed rigs over two days. Judges make regular inspection visits throughout the period, awarding points for roofing skill, technique and adherence to Health and Safety practices.
This year’s event attracted 23 teams from 12 countries including Russia, France and Germany. The UK’s three two-man teams achieved the best results for many years, with Matthew and his team mate Martyn McAlister taking gold in the pitched roof category, using JB-RED roofing battens from John Brash. It had been five years since the UK achieved its last medal in the competition and a decade since the nation took gold.

Matthew grew up in Gainsborough and worked at John Brash’s production centre during his student holidays. He said: “I really enjoyed the contest and it was good to work with JB-RED battens, which I always use in my job because it means I don’t have to carry out any additional grading on site. Clients and building inspectors also recognise JB-RED as a quality product on site.”
JB-RED battens are characterised by their red finish and ‘BS5534’ stamp, confirming they have been stringently tested to ensure they meet the British Standard, using production processes independently certified by the Building Research Establishment (BRE).
The company was the UK’s first timber company to be awarded BRE’s prestigious Tick Mark status for JB-RED, which recognises the company’s excellence in grading and preservative treatment of its roofing battens.
