Retrofitting is upgrading existing buildings with energy efficiency or renewable measures in order to reduce the amount of carbon emitted and energy consumed. In order to achieve the government’s 2050 target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80%, we need to retrofit 700,000 properties a year in the UK - that's 13,000 per week! To achieve this aim, over £500 billion is likely to be spent over the next three decades on upgrading existing housing, commercial and industrial buildings.
The West Midlands is leading the way and is acknowledged across the UK as a ‘retrofit hot-spot.’ The region has recognised that the retrofitting of older housing stock, public buildings and commercial property with energy efficiency measures not only has a positive impact on living and working standards and the environment but creates much needed jobs in the construction sector.
Launched last year, Birmingham Energy Savers is the first example of a local authority delivering the Government's Green Deal. Together with their partner Carillion, they will be presenting how they are scaling up delivery across the City and reaching the domestic customer. With the recent addition of ‘Telford Energy Savers’ partnership and new frameworks being developed by ‘Walsall Housing Group’ and ‘British Gas’ the regional retrofit activity is set to boom!
