J D Wetherspoons were overall winners of the 2010 Loo of the Year awards. This was thanks in some part to washfountains supplied by Relcross that have been fitted in a growing number of their pubs and bars all the way from the Trafalgar in Portsmouth to the Justice Mill in Aberdeen (pictured).
Apart from their obvious style, washfountains also make a lot of sense in terms of water conservation, energy saving, space saving and economic installation. A typical single wash basin with separate, user controlled taps has an average flow rate of around 9.5 litres per minute - for just one person to use. A five ‘station’ Classic Washfountain has an average flow of only 7.5 litres per minute. That’s less than a single basin yet it can be used by up to 5 people at once - a potential saving of 40 litres per minute. With the 8 station set up, the savings are even greater. But it’s not just the water saving, it also means less energy used to heat that water.
Installation costs are also much less. A washfountain has only one hot, one cold and one waste connection. This replaces up to 8 individual basins with 16 taps and a total of 24 connections. There’s no vanity unit to build and the whole installation is much simpler. Washfountains also have lower cleaning and maintenance costs.
