Protecting against fire without compromising design

Maintaining the passive fire protection of a building without compromising on the interior design is a challenge Komfort is well versed in addressing.

Details in ‘Ensuring best practice for passive fire protection in buildings’ from the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) states: “It is vital that fire protection measures are correctly designed, specified and installed if a building is to behave as expected should fire break out”.

The design and technical team at Komfort can help designers, architects and contractors achieve this by creating inspiring interiors without compromising on fire performance. Komfort’s expertise enables it to design intelligent interiors with built in fire performance properties that restrict the growth and spread of a fire. This allows the occupants to escape while reducing the risk to firefighters.

Komfort’s range of fire screen products provide up to 120 minutes of resistance, during which they retain their integrity and insulation properties. This ensures they provide a highly attractive option in glazed environments while simultaneously offering effective passive fire resistance. In addition Komfort’s fire screen products integrate seamlessly with its partitioning and door systems to ensure consistency of design and performance.

Komfort’s Design and Development Manager, Matt Peake said: “Our glazed fire screens offer high performance fire protection which means architects do not have to compromise on design in risk areas. Equally, contractors benefit from the fact they complement all our partitioning and doors which means we deliver a fully certified system that our specialists install to ensure guaranteed performance.”

Komfort’s fire screens can be used in a variety of applications where visibility and the design benefits of glass are desired. This means atria, stairwells and compartmentalised interiors – as well as buildings requiring glazed walls such as car showrooms – are able to benefit from the aesthetics of glazing combined with high fire performance.

Komfort recently supplied its fire rated Polar partitioning system and bespoke fire screens to the Avon & Somerset Police as part of the service’s facilities modernisation plans. Komfort products were specified by the consortium leading the project, the Blue Light Partnership, because of its ability to create intelligent systems with passive fire protection properties. Komfort’s team worked closely with the consortium during the design process to ensure that a system that met the project’s specific needs was developed. This included providing glazed fire protection to stairwells and forming glazed escape routes.

Komfort’s range of BS 476 approved fire resistant glazing systems includes the latest silicone butt jointed technology and high performance timber and steel framed systems. As part of the company’s comprehensive service, its expert staff are on hand to advise architects and contractors about each system and how they can meet the specific demands of a project, from initial enquiry right through the design process to site installation.
