Project requirements
As the football season drew to a close it was time for Old Trafford to commence its renovation projects including the hospitality areas in the West Stand and South East Quadrant. All of which needed to be completed before The Clubs testimonial, which was no mean feat when you consider that the match was only a couple of months away.
Having been previously let down on lead times and service by a key player in the lighting industry, Manchester United FC was, understandably nervous about appointing a new supplier with whom they could rely on to supply all the fittings on time and to budget.
Alard Electrical Ltd, the electrical contractors for the renovation project, had previously worked with Gamma on other projects and so was happy to recommend the company as a reliable partner for the lighting requirements of the renovation.
Project solutions
The renovation of the hospitality area in the West and South East Stand Quadrants was a prestigious project and the selected LED fittings had to help create a luxurious ambience that reflected the high-end surroundings, yet didn’t detract from the other creative and decorative lighting features.
With this in mind the TTX 700 lumen, 3000K with 60° beam and centre etched glass was chosen for the ambient lighting in the corridor areas. This provided the perfect amount of light and offered a quality and aesthetically pleasing fitting for the location.
In addition to the TTX fittings, Syncro M, S1 and S2 LED lights were selected for the adjustable display lighting to highlight the various pictures which adorn the corridor walls as well as above the doorways leading off the corridors. Each of these fittings offered 580 lumen output, 4000K and a selection of 54° and 24° beam angles with a brushed aluminium finish.
For the toilets and hospitality bar area the Buddy M fitting was selected as an excellent low energy alternative to the 50W halogen GU10. The Buddy M provided a cost effective adjustable and lockable gimbal, 40° beam angle and a warm colour temperature of 2700K.
It was at this point that Hannon Associates, Building Services Consultants for the project, were asked to review the fittings supplied by Gamma. After analysis and a range of tests, the fittings were approved for the job.
Project results
As well as creating the desired ambience the LED luminaires will save a substantial amount of time and money over their long life when compared to other light sources. A prime example of this is the Buddy M which consumes only 7W giving a saving of up to 85% when compared to a 50W halogen GU10.
Further savings will be made from the exceptional life of 50,000 hours (L70) offered by the TTX luminaires, during which time there will be low maintenance costs and minimal disruption no-relamping requirements.
To the delight of Manchester United the renovation project was completed on time and without any problems or issues, which meant that the hospitality area was open for business at the start of the testimonial matches.
