Over 750 high performance internal fire doors fitted with the latest security hardware have been designed, manufactured and installed by steel door specialist Powershield for the new Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport.
Dublin Airport is currently Europe’s tenth largest for international traffic, handling approximately 20 million passengers each year. The second terminal forms part of a five-year, €1.2bn development programme being delivered by the Dublin Airport Authority and will be fully operational by November 2010.
A variety of internal fire doors with a 60-minute fire rating were installed throughout the terminal, whilst security doors fitted with high security locks and cylinders were specified for the detention rooms.
Powershield supplied all ironmongery for every door on the project, with all components sourced internally from within the ASSA ABLOY Group. This further consolidates the group’s position as global leaders in complete door opening solutions.
For improved aesthetics, a unique Formica laminate and full height stainless steel wrap pushplates were applied to approximately 50% of the doors to create a bespoke solution, tailored to the airport’s requirements.
Commenting on the project, Sales Director of Powershield Brian Sofley said: “This was a large and complex project with high-spec finishes. The project involved a six-month R&D programme to develop and test the highly specialised door solution requested by the architect. The finished product is one of the most detailed specifications we have ever delivered.
“Powershield worked closely with project architect Pascal & Watson and main contractor PJ Hegarty to complete design details, tailor each door to exact tolerances through on-site measurement before production, and to deliver and install high quality doors within a complex and high finish surrounding structure.”
Brian adds: “Internal fire doors are an essential safety feature within busy transport hubs like airports. Steel doors provide a higher level of fire protection than other materials and will prevent the spread of fire to protect passengers and staff, and create maximum evacuation time. The superior strength and durability of steel doors combined with relatively low maintenance expectations makes this product an ideal choice for high traffic areas.”
Powershield fire doors have been tested in accordance with Certifire and are accredited to BS 476: Part 22: 1987 and BS EN 1634-1:2000.
