PHS Waterlogic achieves the Carbon Reduction Label

PHS Waterlogic, Europe’s largest supplier of mains-fed water dispensing and purifying systems, has announced that it is the world’s first company to have the carbon footprint of its water dispenser service certified by Carbon Trust Certification and to display the Carbon Reduction Label.

Carbon Trust Certification certified the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted by the service at every stage throughout its lifecycle, including manufacture, transportation, preparation and usage, right through to final disposal.

The Carbon Reduction Label communicates that the carbon footprint has been accurately measured and that PHS Waterlogic is publically committed to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of its drinking water dispenser service across the lifecycle, over a two-year period.

PHS has a long-standing commitment to being a responsible and sustainable business, to reduce its carbon footprint rather than merely offset it, like many others in the industry. It also aims to support its customers and other organisations to reduce their carbon impact.

“Carbon performance is quite rightly becoming an increasingly important part of choosing suppliers and we are committed to reducing the impact of drinking water provision for all organisations. PHS Waterlogic now provides robust data on the carbon footprint of a range of its mains-fed dispenser services, allowing customers to make informed, sustainable purchasing decisions and meet their own environmental targets.” explained Managing Director of PHS Waterlogic, David Matthews.

To qualify to use the Carbon Reduction Label, PHS Waterlogic had to be certified by Carbon Trust Certification Limited to the British Standards Institution’s Publicly Available Specification 2050:2008 (PAS 2050:2008), the Carbon Trust’s Code of Good Practice and the Carbon Trust’s Footprint Expert Guide.

Darran Messem, Managing Director of Certification at the Carbon Trust, said: “Calculating the carbon footprint of a product or service is an important step in reducing both greenhouse gas emissions and costs.

“The Carbon Trust congratulates PHS Waterlogic for committing to reduce the impact of its drinking water dispenser service. By achieving certification and the eligibility to use the Carbon Reduction Label demonstrates that, with the right level of skills, tenacity and support, companies like PHS Waterlogic can reduce their organisation’s environmental impact, which has a hugely positive effect on a company’s reputation, and the business as a whole.”

Becoming eligible to hold the Carbon Reduction Label is a major achievement for PHS Waterlogic in its commitment to reduce environmental impact. As a result of this programme, the company has introduced a number of carbon reduction activities; an example being the introduction of new filters for its mains-fed water coolers. These new filter systems ensure that the filter’s plastic housing is reused, rather than sent to landfill. The internal parts are then recycled and only the carbon filtration granules themselves are now replaced and disposed of, decreasing the amount of material sent to landfill by over 81 per cent.

Beyond product innovation, since the carbon footprinting data were gathered, the company has also improved its Totalcare service by the introduction of wireless working for its engineers.

By equipping them with handheld terminals the company has reduced the paper trail associated with ordering, whilst at the same time improving the speed of response for its customers.

PHS Group’s Chief Executive, Gareth Rhys Williams, said: “With nearly 50 years’ experience of operating in complex and highly regulated markets, environmental and ethical best practice has always been, and continues to be, fundamental to our business and a natural part of ‘what we do’.

“We are delighted to announce our eligibility to use the Carbon Trust’s Carbon Reduction Label, and I am proud of the staff at PHS who worked so hard alongside the Carbon Trust, to achieve it.”
