Nextgen study tours begin in Birmingham

Nextgen – the largest and most established event for energy generation with a major focus on rural renewables and urban technologies – has announced a series of six study tours taking place around the UK over the next seven weeks.

The Nextgen Study Tours have proved to be very popular over the years providing delegates with a wealth of invaluable information from academics, consultants and plant owners.

The first tour will take place on Thursday, October 24 at the EBRI, Aston and ICC Energy Centre, Birmingham where delegates will have the opportunity to visit two sites.

The tour in Birmingham is a first in a series of Site Tours that Nextgen Media arranges to help to showcase emerging and working low carbon and sustainable energy generating technology. The two site visits in Birmingham will focus on the creation of low carbon, sustainable cities through the use of Bioenergy, Energy from waste and CHP.

The visit will provide delegates with a fascinating insight into the work of the European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI) and how businesses can work with the EBRI; the opportunity and risks regarding a robust bioenergy business case and considerations and opportunities for feeding biogas to the grid. Delegates will also be provided with an overview of the Birmingham District Energy Scheme and the role of Local Authorities in District heating schemes.

Delegates will then visit two different sites – EBRI, Aston University and The ICC Energy Centre:

The EBRI, Aston University delivers World-class research into all aspects of bioenergy, ranging from fundamental research through development, to deployment of innovative technologies. The tour will highlight EBRI’s own innovative Pyroformer technology in its on-site gasifier plant, which delivers both syngas and bio oil from municipal bio waste.

The ICC Energy Centre is at the heart of The Birmingham District Energy Scheme which plays a pivotal role in Birmingham City Council’s climate change strategy, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 60% by 2025. The scheme features Tri-generation; producing heat, electricity and chilled water. The scheme makes extensive use of highly efficient large-scale combined heat and power (CHP) technologies and the visit to the ICC energy centre will demonstrate all of these, as well as the complex control systems required.

Event Director for nextgen, Chris Down, said: “We are excited to be hosting more Study Tours as we are always seeking ways to engage with all stakeholders and technology providers across the renewable and distributed energy generation markets. These hands on tours provide invaluable knowledge to delegates and provide a rare opportunity for people to fully understand how these facilities work and grasp the incredible benefits they offer.”
