Mapei takes the lead on sustainability for the built environment

Mapei, a leading manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and chemical products for building has reinforced its longstanding commitment to providing a sustainable built environment by becoming a member of the UK’s Green Building Council (UK-GBC).

The UK-GBC campaigns for a sustainable built environment. Its members work together to develop consistency and leadership on sustainability across the construction sector.

Mapei is a proud innovator of environmentally responsible solutions. Many of Mapei’s products have been granted EC1 certification – for extremely low levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Mapei also manufacture more than 150 LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) compliant products, the industry's largest selection of eco-friendly products.

Mapei has invested heavily in research and development to formulate ecologically sustainable products and systems. This has resulted in the creation of Low Dust adhesives - improving indoor air quality and a cleaner working area. As well as lightweight adhesives - reducing transportation costs and improving manual handling. Mapei has also innovated products with anti-mould technology and products that contain a high proportion (20 – 30%) of recycled material.

Mapei's commitment to the environment extends not just to their products but to their facilities and processes - from minimising waste to maximising use of recycled materials. Mapei has adopted an Environmental Management System according to ISO 14001. This has lead to a reduction in the amount of waste created in its production processes and to the subsequent recycling of the vast majority of this waste. In the UK alone this has resulted in more than a 95% reduction in landfill waste.

Through its global operations and manufacturing products near its major geographical markets, Mapei reduces fuel use and minimises pollution from road transportation thus helping to minimise its global carbon footprint.

To assist in the selection of “greener” products from the Mapei range, the green innovation logo has been incorporated into its product packaging.

Mark Louch, Managing Director of Mapei UK commented, “At Mapei we are committed to protecting the earth, using energy and resources sustainably, minimising waste, as well as developing and supplying products with user-safety in mind. Our commitment to research in this field and our support of the available internationally recognised certification systems defines the integrity, honesty and sincerity of a truly caring company which is encompassed by our membership of the UK Green Building Council.’

UK Green Building Council Chief Executive, Paul King added “Sustainability is a huge challenge, but also a huge opportunity for the industry. Increasingly a more sustainable building is a higher quality and more valuable building. It’s great to have Mapei on board, who bring with them a great deal of expertise in their field.”

Mapei’s global commitment to sustainability is reflected in their membership of the Green Building Council in the following countries; Italy, USA, Canada, France, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
