A call to action is being made to all manufacturers to share their current understanding of BIM and identify their support needs, by taking part in a short survey.
A new forum, called BIM for Manufacturers and Manufacturing (or BIM4M2), has recently been created to represent the needs of manufacturers as the industry moves towards the 2016 deadline for adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and beyond.
Ever since the Government launched its UK Construction Strategy in May 2010 which featured BIM as a core deliverable, the industry has been busy readying itself; but little thought has been given to the vital role that product suppliers will play in improving information exchange and asset management, that sits at the heart of BIM.
Steve Thompson, chair of the forum commented: “BIM4M2 acts as a conduit for manufacturers‘ needs into the Government’s BIM Task Group. We are working together to ensure that product suppliers can adapt to the new format with minimal cost and complexity, but can also benefit from the opportunities that BIM undoubtedly brings.
“Manufacturers’ feedback via the questionnaire will help to identify the challenges faced in gearing up for BIM as well as gaps in knowledge and understanding. We will then provide support through the transition to a BIM-ready industry, with solutions developed through our working groups focussing on education, data templates and promotions. This is the first survey run to capture the views of manufacturers. Now is the time for our voice to be heard.”
All manufacturers and their staff, whether just starting out or experienced in BIM, are encouraged to participate in the survey.
