Lower price guaranteed with Calor LPG at Ecobuild

At Ecobuild 2014, Calor Gas (Calor) is launching its new LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) price promise for specifiers, which guarantees that Calor LPG will be cheaper than their commercial clients’ current oil price.

Research indicates that most specifiers of off-grid fuel solutions believe that oil is a much cheaper alternative to LPG and, as a result, there is limited awareness of the many benefits of the fuel source.

As well as the fact that LPG is frequently cheaper than oil in real pence per kilowatt terms, the fuel also comes with a wide range of inherent user benefits including higher efficiencies, reduced carbon emissions, lower total cost of ownership and reduced risk.

Calor’s ‘LPG – lower price guarantee’ therefore is aimed at M&E engineers, heating and energy consultants, architects and installers specifying off-grid fuel solutions for commercial installations only, to challenge this common misconception and to create awareness of the cost and efficiency benefits that can be realised through a Calor LPG installation.

In addition, Calor’s appliance partners will be exhibiting their latest equipment technologies on the stand, including Blades Low Carbon Systems’ combination server gas boilers, Rinnai gas water heaters and the new Daikin UK hybrid heat pump. When used in conjunction with LPG as a highly efficient fuel source, such technologies can achieve far greater cost benefits than comparable oil-based equipment solutions.

Keith Higginson, commercial marketing manager from Calor adds: “There are many reasons why LPG is the ideal fuel source for off-grid commercial installations and, while our price guarantee offers a tangible reason to make the switch from oil, we also want to educate the market that price is not the only benefit on offer.

“As well as offering more fixed and stable pricing, as LPG supply typically exceeds demand, LPG also offers a host of benefits that oil installations simply cannot deliver. These range from large carbon savings and improved environmental performance, to lower risk, to improved boiler performance and efficiency to compatibility with renewables.

“For example, while heating oil theft is increasing, LPG theft is almost unheard of as it is technically very difficult to steal from an LPG tank. In addition, the financial and reputational damage of an oil spillage can be extensive; whereas LPG leaks and spills don’t pose ground or water pollution hazards.

“LPG is also the cleanest burning fossil fuel for CO2, sulphur oxides, nitrous oxides and particulates, resulting in healthier air quality and, is a logical, low carbon backup fuel to renewable technologies.”

Calor’s technology partners will also be exhibiting their latest equipment solutions on the stand and offering advice to specifiers and installers on how to achieve the highest levels of efficiency through an LPG installation.

Daikin UK will be displaying its new Altherma Hybrid Heat Pump, delivering up to 35% higher heating efficiencies and major cost savings as David Lacey, commercial director, heating and renewables at Daikin UK explains: “Our partnership with Calor Gas is vital, as continually rising energy costs in the UK impact on business profitability. The Daikin Altherma Hybrid Heat Pump system offers a viable, renewable and cheaper alternative by combining an air-to-water heat pump and gas condensing combi boiler.

“The system chooses the most economical operating conditions, for the lowest running costs, using information about energy prices, heat pump efficiency and heat load requirements.”

Blades Low Carbon Systems (Blades) will be exhibiting its popular heating and hot water servers and introducing its new 28/100 unit, a 28kW boiler with a 100-litre hot water cylinder ideal for smaller commercial applications.

Adrian Acaster, CEO of Blades adds, “Each Blades installation is designed to make every litre of LPG fuel input achieve the maximum return in heat efficiency. Typically, Blades’ installations save between 25 and 40 per cent on fuel bills and carbon emissions.

“This is achieved using innovative flue heat recovery technology, to flexibly reuse the otherwise wasted flue gas, either by preheating the DHW cold feed, or by a variety of space heating applications, as appropriate for the client’s requirements.”

Rinnai, the World’s largest gas appliance company, will be showcasing the HDC1500 continuous-flow water heater, capable of heating up to 1500 litres of temperature accurate hot water per hour.

The unit is ideal for commercial applications requiring high volumes of hot water at intermittent times of the day. Chris Goggin, associate director at Rinnai explains how the company’s advanced technology can achieve efficiencies of up to 107%: “Rather than storing hot water in a cylinder, Rinnai continuous flow water heaters heat the water on demand, with temperature control to within 1 oC of set point to ensure safety and comfort. Our condensing technology incorporates dual heat exchangers achieving optimum water heating from LPG gas and residual heat is captured from flue gases and transferred in to the water being heated.”

The compact, wall-mounted design can be installed internally, with extended flue runs of up to 15 metres, or externally, featuring frost protection as standard.
