Locking onto access control solutions

Here Dr Steffan George, development director for the UK’s biggest locksmithing trade association, the Master Locksmiths Association talks about the importance of access control and getting it right from the start.

Considering all of the responsibilities faced by architects, contractors and developers on a daily basis, it is easy to see why in some instances access control is perceived as an inconvenient distraction rather than a necessity.

However, the need to monitor exactly who is coming in and out of a public building is essential for ensuring security and meeting health and safety regulations.  While in residential accommodation best practice and legal requirements need to be taken into account to ensure an appropriate level of safety and security is reached.

If security is considered from the start it not only ensures people, property and contents are protected, but it is also much easier to maintain and upgrade a system as the building ages – saving time and money in the long-term.

Although there has been a lot of technological developments in security systems over the years, all products will not be suitable for every building, so a development-specific security plan is advisable.  Access control comes in many forms including locks and keys, electronic systems, digital entry systems and even manned receptions, so it is always advisable to speak to a qualified and experienced locksmith to discuss solutions that best meet the particular needs and use of the building, site or series of buildings.

It is also essential any fitted security measures are in-line with health and safety legislation – questions should include are there enough emergency exits and are they positioned in the right place to allow for easy escape and do they have the appropriate hardware on them?  In a house, should windows open without the need for a key to allow for emergency situations?  If you do not know the answer to these questions it’s vital to seek the advice from someone who does.

A professional locksmith will not only be able to advise on the most appropriate hardware for your needs but they will also be able to fit such measures correctly and maintain them at the appropriate intervals.

“In addition, a locksmith will be able to offer you further advice on wider security issues such as fences, grates, CCTV, alarms, car parking security and garages ensuring all options have been considered.
