New affordable and sustainable homes

The Leadbitter Group has completed four affordable town houses, built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5, in Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The four bedroom homes in Elfed Avenue feature a range of sustainable technologies, including photovoltaic panels, airtight construction, enhanced insulation, low energy lighting and highly energy-efficient boilers. All have been let via Homes4U and residents are already enjoying the energy-efficient new homes.

This is the first of two projects being delivered by Leadbitter for Newydd Housing Association, which is a member of the Integrate Consortium. Integrate is made up of eight housing associations which together manage around 23,000 homes in south Wales. Leadbitter secured both Elfed Avenue and a scheme to construction of 24 houses on Rose Row in Aberdare under the Integrate Consortium framework.

During the build, Leadbitter offered two Pathway to Apprenticeship placements in bricklaying, through Integrate’s Targeted Recruitment and Training team. These provided a fantastic opportunity for two young learners to engage in valuable pre-apprenticeship training.

Russell Houghton, Business Development Director of Leadbitter’s Western division, said: “We are proud to complete this sustainable housing development for Newydd Housing Association. The scheme demonstrates how Leadbitter can deliver housing with a low environmental impact that can also have a positive impact on the communities in which we work.”

Paul Roberts, Chief Executive of Newydd Housing Association, said: “This is a flagship scheme that showcases the latest eco-friendly technology. Its completion allows us to provide homes that are not just affordable to rent but also affordable to heat in an area of great housing need.”

The Elfed Avenue scheme is one of just a few selected housing developments that will provide a number of sustainable homes across Wales as part of a pilot project by the Welsh Government.

The highly energy-efficient houses will support the Integrate Consortium’s objective to secure better value for money and greater sustainability in the development of housing.
