LAFARGE Readymix has received an additional honour from prestigious eco-champions, The Green Organisation, for its flooring concrete, Extensia™.

As well as gaining a Green Apple Award the unique, more environmentally friendly, low-shrink product earned Green Hero status.

Lafarge and Extensia™ will also be featured in The Green Book, the world’s only work of reference on environmental best practice, distributed globally with the intention of inspiring future ecologically sound innovation.

Jeremy Greenwood, Managing Director, Readymix, Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK, received the Green Apple Award and learnt of the further success at a glittering prize-giving ceremony held in the House of Commons.

Jeremy said:

“This is a true honour, being recognised by The Green Organisation for one award is truly outstanding, but to hear we have been awarded Green Hero status just goes to show that all the hard work of our employees has paid off.
“I am so proud of each and every member of the business for all their hard work in extremely challenging times, we will continue to innovate to build a better future.”

Lafarge’s recognition for Extensia™, under the project title Bringing New Dimensions to Concrete, came in the Environmental Best Practice section of The Green Apple Awards.

The judges said:

“As Lafarge claim to be the only concrete producer that routinely invests in R&D, it is no surprise they have created the true 21st century concrete.
“Extensia™ uses significantly less energy and materials in the production and has better environmental performance and recycle-ability throughout its life.”

Unlike conventional concrete Extensia™ features low shrinkage properties which reduce cracking, decrease drying deformities and minimise porosity.

This advanced design means there is no need to include steel mesh or steel fibre to control drying shrinkage.

Its high flexural strength also means it can be laid in thinner slabs, reducing the total amount of concrete required.

This breakthrough formulation means the use of Extensia™ can reduce the carbon emissions of the construction process by 20 per cent compared with the use of conventional concrete.
The absence of steel also makes the flooring 100 per cent recyclable.

National organiser, Roger Wolens commented:

“To show continued interest in environmental issues during the current financial climate shows great foresight and they deserve the recognition of being Green Apple Award winners.
“To then go further and become Green Heroes is an even bolder statement of environmental intent, and organisations that go that extra mile and become Green Heroes are demonstrating a serious commitment to the world around them.
“They invest in a better future for us all and deserve to be recognised for their efforts.”

It took two years to develop Extensia™ following feedback from customers who wanted a concrete with better sustainable credentials. Now the product is available in the UK and Canada.

The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 an are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environmental group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.

Supporters include the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and various other professional bodies.
