ISG has been awarded a £3 million refurbishment project as part of a programme to create a new Institute of Immunity, Infection and Transplantation at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
The institute, a partnership development between the Royal Free and University College London (UCL), will provide state-of-the-art facilities in which important immunity, infection and transplantation research can take place and new treatments developed.
The 33-week project is the first contract to be awarded to ISG by The Royal Free, following a competitive tender process, and involves the refurbishment of existing accommodation on the second floor of the hospital.
ISG will strip out the 1,590 sq ft area to shell and core, remodelling the space to create a series of new laboratories, clinical trial patient units and offices. The fit out includes new mechanical and electrical services, including medical gases, a new nurse call system and installation of general medical and lab equipment.
The contractor will install 75 sinks to serve the lab and clinical trial areas, with associated high level drainage in the ceiling void of the floor below to enable waste water to drain through to the service riser. The project will also see ISG deliver new architectural and decorative finishes throughout, including new flooring and ceilings.
The challenging scheme will be carried out in a live hospital environment in an area adjacent to occupied wards, with day clinics and a sleep centre directly below, and operating theatres occupying the floor above. A robust and flexible project programme has been designed to incorporate out-of-hours working, with careful consideration given to accessing the building to minimise potential disruption to staff and patients.
Paul Cossell, managing director of ISG Fit Out, commented: “Securing this complex project against strong competition is a real coup for the business.
“This scheme builds upon our enviable track record in healthcare projects both in London and nationwide, demonstrating our ability to successfully achieve a high quality outcome on time and without interruption to the day-to-day operation of hospital services.”
