Heartlands wins three awards

Stride Treglown is delighted to announce Heartlands in Cornwall has won two RIBA awards.

As a result it will now be put forward for the RIBA Stirling Prize long list. It has also won the RTPI SW Award for Planning Excellence 2013.

Heartlands is the ambitious £35m regeneration of a former mining area for leisure, tourism and residential use, which has alrteady received a number of accolades.

Earlier this month, the development received the RICS South West Project of the Year Award and also a commendation at the Civic Trust Awards.  The scheme has transformed one of Cornwall’s most derelict urban areas into an inspirational cultural landscape.

The primary goal of the Heartlands Project was the regeneration of a significantly derelict and economically depressed community, and it has already delivered tremendous benefits:

  • 42 construction sub-contracts were let locally.
  • 95% of the individual workforce were Cornish - many local. 25 FTE jobs created within the Heartlands Trust.
  • 50 potential FTE jobs within the work space units.
  • 240,000 visitors within the first 10 months. Heartlands is set to become Cornwall’s third most popular visitor destination.
  • Catalyst for regeneration of the surrounding area. Planning proposals have started for workshops, offices, hotel, leisure facilities, private and affordable housing, and development by the Heartlands Trust.

Alastair Wilson, Director at Stride Treglown said: “We are thrilled that Heartlands has won two RIBA Awards and also the RTPI SW Award for Planning Excellence.  We are particularly proud of this project and it’s great for the team to receive such an endorsement.

"Heartlands is a complex scheme and a great example of how a derelict urban space can be reclaimed into a valuable and cultural asset.  It’s fantastic that regeneration projects are receiving such high recognition.”

Stride Treglown was appointed to the Heartlands project as architect, lead-designer, specialist historic building architect, and also provided planning consultancy.
