St John’s House, a 250 year old building, part of the Warwickshire Museum, has undergone an extensive refurbishment programme. A biomass boiler supplied by Hamworthy Heating has been installed as part of the project, and the visiting public will soon be able to see just how ‘green energy’ works in reality, via display boards and a viewing window into the plant room.
The installation of the biomass boiler and a built-in fabricated fuel store to house the wood pellets, also supplied by Hamworthy, was undertaken by Blue Diamond Plumbing and Heating Ltd, and is in line with the County Council’s replacement programme which aims to install renewable products where feasible.
“The Council chose Hamworthy to supply the biomass boiler as the supporting gas boilers were also from them, thus ensuring that the whole system was properly integrated to provide optimal performance,” said Neil Payne, senior mechanical design engineer at Warwickshire County Council.
“This installation allows the museum to reduce its carbon footprint by introducing new technologies as part of the council’s ongoing plan to use renewables in other boiler houses across the county.”
Biomass boilers are now a realistic option for many commercial heating systems and Hamworthy, using their Technology Partner Programme, can design a seamlessly integrated system combining traditional and renewable technologies.
The biomass boiler has automatic ignition, automatic ash removal, Lambda flue gas sensing for exhaust and combustion monitoring, and flue gas dust separation. Wood pellets are delivered into the fuel hopper and then dropped by gravity into the stoker screw.
The 65kW biomass boiler provides the base load heat for space heating demands and is the lead boiler at all times. The additional and peak load demand is satisfied by two Hamworthy Milborne wall hung gas fired condensing boilers, each capable of delivering 100kW. The biomass boiler has a built-in controller with an LCD screen providing an easy user interface for control of the heating system and fuel buffer storage. There is also a multi-cyclone grit arrestor for flue gas dust extraction which means the whole system is compliant with the Clean Air Act Smoke Control Zone legislation.
