Green Deal can protect homes from fire as well as save on energy bills

Green Deal improvements could also protect homes from fire, according to stone wool insulation systems and solutions supplier Rockwool which says more needs to be done to educate consumers about the added benefits of retrofitting their homes.

The firm has developed a new YouTube video in its DOES IT BURN? series, which sees £500 cash (representing the energy bill saving householders could make through insulating their homes*) being placed into a mini-house made of Rockwool and then blasted with a flame thrower.

The £500 is then shown being extracted from the box, undamaged. Rockwool has developed the video with the aim of educating consumers about the multiple roles that insulation can play beyond carbon and energy bill savings.

Rockwool UK Corporate Affairs Director, Paula Bateman states: “The Government has pledged that the Green Deal will bring about the largest home renovation programme since the Second World War but the improvements made in the name of energy efficiency can also protect and improve homes in other ways.

“If home owners are installing insulation as part of the Green Deal, they should look at the other benefits they can achieve and select energy efficiency solutions that deliver the range of improvements that they are most keen to achieve. Insulation can play a vital role in providing fire protection within buildings.

“Equally, insulation now comes in a wide range of renders and finishes and can be used to create striking new aesthetic statements as part of a wider makeover. We hope the new DOES IT BURN? video gets people thinking about how the Green Deal can help protect them from fire risk as well as high energy bills.”
