Grass Concrete MD elected president of British Cycling

British Cycling still on solid ground as Bob Howden, Managing Director of environmental product company Grass Concrete Ltd, is elected President.

Matching concrete with Lycra is Grass Concrete Limited’s owner and MD Bob Howden who has been elected as the new President of British Cycling.

Howden will combine this role with his also recently appointed Chairmanship of British Cycling’s Board. Both jobs were formerly held by Brian Cookson OBE who has moved on to become President of the UCI; Cycling’s World Governing Body.

A lifelong cyclist, 58 year old Howden won’t be new to the demands of the posts having served as Vice Chair of the Board for many years during which team he’s been a prolific event organiser, official and sponsor. He will continue to Chair his home Yorkshire Region of the Federation, whose roads will host the 2014 Grand Départ of the Tour de France. Having organised three National Championships in Yorkshire; Howden relishes the opportunity to see the World’s best riders and its biggest event taking to the county’s roads.

With a network of 25 worldwide partners supplying the Grasscrete paving system mile eater Howden is unlikely to be phased by increased travel prospects and is relishing the opportunity to steer both British Cycling and Grasscrete onto higher levels.

“There will be some re-aligning of my volunteer work within cycling and in my current role in the business says Howden. I’ve always enjoyed a ‘hands on’ approach but there’s a limit to the hours in the day as well as a need to be able to see the wood through the trees. Some of my regionally specific roles within cycling will no longer be compatible with the new post and it’s perhaps also the opportunity to step away from some of the contract related functions within Grass Concrete, but in essence I’ll still be around.”

Founded in 1970 Grass Concrete Limited developed the Grasscrete paving system that combines a permeable reinforced concrete structure with a natural grassed environment.

British Cycling is the brand of the British Cycling Federation the internationally recognised Governing Body of Cycle Sport in Great Britain.
