Grading scaffold boards correctly saves lives

For anyone looking to learn how to grade, band and issue new scaffold boards, BM TRADA’s three-day scaffold board training course is a must-attend event.

Scaffold boards enable workers to carry out their work, at height, safely, on a building. Failure can lead to risk of serious injury or even death. The course looks at how to grade scaffold boards properly using British Standard BS 2482:2009.

The course, which takes place on between September 11-13 at The Horse Trust, Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, provides delegates with an introduction to timber, including the uses of timber in structural applications, an explanation of strength grading, and the marking systems for scaffold boards.

There will also be a thorough examination of the responsibilities of the grader, as well as gaining an introduction to the natural growth characteristics of wood, such as knots and grain and how and why these potentially reduce the strength of timber.

The majority of the course is practical: delegates will gain experience grading scaffold boards. They will also learn about the dimensions and tolerances of scaffold boards as well as the correct storage methods when on-site. Finally, day three will see them sit a formal practical exam.

Accurate scaffold board grading is an important health and safety issue, says Philip O'Leary, head of BM TRADA’s Timber Technology Investigations department.

“When scaffold board failure can be a matter of life or death, the reality of getting it right really comes to the fore. Knowing how to grade a scaffold board correctly, the tolerances and storage methods when working on a building site are all critical factors examined during this popular three-day course,” he says.

The cost per person is £550 + VAT for TRADA members and £590 + VAT for non-members.
