The third annual Government Construction Summit, the UK’s most important annual construction event, will take place in London this July to announce what the government envisages for the construction industry to help stimulate and grow the economy over the coming year – ahead of the 2015 general election.
The 2013 summit saw the launch of the overall strategy for the industry - ‘Construction 2025’, which set out bold ambitions and a partnership approach to transform the construction industry. This year’s event will see construction’s influencers review this and decide how work will be taken forward, to build sustainable growth; develop strong, resilient and skilled supply chains; create jobs and realise the potential of the green economy.
The one day event will see Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Peter Hansford, Government Chief Construction Adviser, Sir David Higgins, Chairman of HS2, Lord Young, Enterprise Adviser to the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, Minister of State for Business and Energy, Lord Deighton, Commercial Secretary to the Treasury and Andrew Wyllie, Chief Executive of Costain address attendees to provide the construction sector with an update on the Government Industrial Strategy and issues around it including spend and sustainability. The event will also see experts from the private and public sector speak about how to win work from a client perspective, and what they are looking for from the industry going forward.
The Government Construction Summit has been created by Building, in partnership with the Cabinet Office, the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, Infrastructure UK and the UKTI. The event is the only event of its kind organised in partnership with the government. It takes place at a time of dynamic change in the industry - as it experiences rapid growth following the recession and the government now encouraging investment in the sector to stimulate the UK’s economy.
Tom Broughton, Brand Director - Building and Head of Content at UBM Live Built Environment said; “This event demonstrates the importance of the construction industry to the UK economy and the ongoing recovery. The government input ahead of the next general election is a real sign that this is an area of focus for Britain and one that the main parties will be getting behind to win votes.”
