The £27m indoor sports complex at Stirling Sports Village, The Peak, is adjacent to Forthbank football stadium, the home of Stirling Albion, and the new Stirling County Cricket Club. Designed by S&P Architects, it features interlocking panels in pre-weathered ANTHRA-ZINC® and QUARTZ-ZINC from VMZINC. The dark charcoal colour complements the extensive areas of glazing while contrasting with the lighter grey of composite panels. The building has a 25 metre competition pool, a children’s fun pool complete with moveable floor, a curling-focused ice rink, nine-court multi-sports hall, fitness gym, three studios and a climbing wall. External facilities also include synthetic pitches for football and hockey.
The VMZ Interlocking panel façade system can be installed horizontally or vertically on a metal or a wooden framework fixed to the supporting structure. The panels have an elegant appearance with a reveal joint and as a rain screen have a ventilated air space with provision made for drainage from within the exterior envelope.
The project design was developed to create a visually open architectural screen facing the public, to act as a foil to the simple, large sealed boxes containing the ice and games halls – a contemporary take on the approach of AWS Cross, the architect of many fine Victorian buildings. Each of the primary sports spaces has been designed to create a series of varying-heights, with the cloak-like roof draped over them
