The very first battery carbon monoxide alarm range with a full 10-year guarantee has been launched by Kidde Fyrnetics, the world’s largest manufacturer of residential smoke, heat and CO alarms. The new TenYCO self-contained, state of the art carbon monoxide alarms are specially designed for quick and simple installation by non-electricians and for low cost of ownership.
Both models are small in size with a neat appearance and can be wall-mounted or used free-standing. Battery specification is critical to long-term performance and TenYCO is powered by two Fuji ultra long-life lithium batteries, each with 2300 mAh capacity, also covered by Kidde’s unique 10-year guarantee. TenYCO is not activated until the alarm is mounted onto its base plate, so preserving freshness until needed, and batteries are optimised by ‘anti-passivation’ software. Batteries are also sealed-in to ensure full 10-year lifetime operation, no call-backs and real cost of ownership savings. Both models feature a tamper resisting, self-locking installation system to avoid battery theft. And TenYCO enjoys the same 10-year replacement cycle as Kidde’s Ten-4 smoke alarm, simplifying property management.
For safety without compromise, TenYCO checks the environment for carbon monoxide once every second – a much shorter interval than competing products. Because carbon monoxide is a cumulative poison, long-term exposures to low levels may also cause symptoms, as well as short-term exposures to high levels. TenYCO has a time-weighted alarm so that the higher the level of CO present, the sooner the alarm will be triggered. And a conformal wax coating protects critical electronic components in damp environments. One model - 8LLDCO – also has a digital display to provide early warning of intermittent and low levels of carbon monoxide. A ‘Peak Level’ button can also help identify CO problems occurring when the property is not occupied.
All Kidde Fyrnetics CO alarms are BSi Kitemarked, comply with the latest edition of BS EN 50291:2010. Their CO cells use safer and environmentally friendly de-ionised water rather than acid-based electrolytes that suffer variations in electrolytic concentrations. Kidde manufactures its own CO cells – the key component – rather than buying them in, allowing tighter quality controls to be applied. Every Kidde sensor is tested under CO itself in the factory and all products must pass through several key quality testing ‘gates’ before becoming available for sale.
From a wider perspective, the size, expertise and resources of Kidde as the largest manufacturer will provide reassurance of consistent product quality and reliability. CO alarms are essential to protect occupants from carbon monoxide and meet housing providers’ responsibilities. With Building Regulations, the Green Deal and other safety regulations requiring them, fitting carbon monoxide alarms is also an important consideration for anyone working on housing.
But they must be reliable, safe and problem-free over the long term. The new TenYCO range has been designed specifically to meet all these demands. It is ideal for local authority and housing association use, particularly as it can be quickly installed by the maintenance team. Kidde’s competitive pricing will meet any Best Value criteria, making TenYCO the responsible choice for all those involved with housing.
