For some time, NFRC has been working on addressing the lack of formal training in the Sheeting and Cladding and Rainscreen roofing disciplines. A first start was the introduction of Special Apprenticeship Programmes (SAP) for both Sheeting and Cladding and Rainscreen. However, there still remained anomalies for companies employing self-employed and over 19 year old apprentices. Now, in a ground-breaking trial, 20 NFRC Sheeting and Cladding and Rainscreen companies will be selected to take part in a radical initiative with CITB-ConstructionSkills for a period of two years.
Key details about the trial include, that it will be available to everyone, irrespective of age or employment status. The training is planned by NFRC, automatically to lead to a Level 2 NVQ in Sheeting and Cladding or Rainscreen, if fully completed.
More importantly, in order to encourage take up, the daily grant rate for the trial has been increased to £137.25.
It is hoped that this clearer, simplified training requirement and increased payments to all employees will lead to increased training and qualifications in the industrial roofing sector. The trial begins in August 2012 and companies selected, and who wish to participate, will be notified shortly.
