New contract awards and significant progress made in completing large-scale projects have boosted Clegg Construction’s reputation as a leader in the construction industry’s education sector.
Clegg Construction’s managing director Simon Blackburn says that repeat business from established clients as well as attracting new clients in the education sector is ensuring the company is held within extremely high regard.
The Nottingham-based company has begun work on a £13.25million student accommodation project – its largest current student development scheme – at Selly Oaks in Birmingham. It is also close to completing a £3.5million Study Inn student halls project in Nottingham.
Simon Blackburn said: “I’m delighted we are building such an enviable reputation in the education sector. Of course, we can still focus on high-profile projects across all areas including commercial, residential and industrial sectors but it’s excellent to see that our education projects are so well-respected and that we are seeing the benefits of repeat business and attracting new customers in the sector too.”
The project at Selly Oaks in Birmingham will provide accommodation for 437 students. Clegg Construction was awarded the contract, where three steel frame blocks of eight, six and five storey flats will be built for The Student Development Partnership, after winning it through a competitive tender process.
Clegg has previously worked for the partnership’s operator Victoria Hall on its Nottingham and Leicester student residences, but this project is the largest build and budget Clegg Construction has been given by the client.
“We’re thrilled that Victoria Hall has come back to us for this project, they are an excellent client to work for,” said Simon. “We’ve built a really successful relationship with the developers over the years and this build is their most challenging brief to date.
“Not only is it a large-scale project, but the building site is very restricted. It is bound by the new Selly Oaks bypass, a railway line and a brook. Therefore careful planning was required to ensure that we make the most of the space available for the building works so that logistically, the site restrictions did not hinder the space required for the construction,” Simon added.
Clegg Construction is also close to completing the £3.5million Study Inn project in Nottingham. Clegg Construction was contracted to do the work by the student residence developer after winning it through a competitive tender. They were given just five months to complete the project, showing Clegg Construction’s ability to turnaround large-scale projects within tight deadlines.
“We’re delighted how quickly work has progressed for this project,” said Simon. “It was an incredibly tight schedule and we’ve worked around the clock in order to finish the conversion as quickly as possible.
“The work so far has been really well-received and we’ve built a successful relationship with Study Inn, who has been an excellent client to work for. They needed a quick turnaround time and I’m pleased that we’ve been able to deliver thanks to our experienced site team and use of local suppliers.”
Another challenge for Clegg Construction has been the location of the site. Simon added: “Because the site is right in the middle of the city on a major one-way road, we’ve had to liaise closely with the Highways Authority and Environment Agency. This has involved a lot of careful coordination between several organisations.”
Amongst the many further successful education projects by Clegg Construction are a £5million project to create five new laboratories and office accommodation in the main campus building at Aston University.
Clegg Construction has also completed a striking new £5.4million school of humanities building and a £6.5 million Energy Technologies Building at the University of Nottingham as well as a £20million student accommodation development at Faraday Road in Nottingham.
