A TECHNICOLOUR stairway using Centriforce’s Duraplas® recycled plastic profiles has delivered a dream solution for managers at the Alton Towers Resort Waterpark in the Splash Landings Hotel.
Maintaining colourful and appealing surroundings for visitors to the fun complex of pools, chutes and slides is a challenge for the Resort as any fixtures and fittings must be able to withstand heavy use in a constantly damp, humid environment and rigorous cleaning regimes.
So, when a replacement was needed for the balustrade on a stairway to the water chutes, the Splash Landings Hotel maintenance team turned to Centriforce products to supply the only multi-coloured plastic profiles available that could provide a durable solution in keeping with the Waterpark’s surroundings.
Previously, the painted softwood spindles and posts around the original stairwell were vulnerable to becoming discoloured and rotting meaning a complete annual replacement programme was necessary. Not only was this costly, but could only take place in a short period of the year when the Waterpark is closed – just when maintenance time is at a premium to keep the large indoor complex of pools, chutes, bridges and activity areas looking ship-shape.
The new Duraplas balustrades have provided a durable, water-resistant solution in four vivid colours, as well as a natural wood shade. They will withstand heavy use and stay looking bright and fresh for many years of service without the need for active maintenance. Said Gary Ellams, Maintenance Manager (Splash Landings Hotel and Waterpark) at Alton Towers:
“The Waterpark’s maintenance team was impressed by how easy it was the build the new balustrades with the Duraplas profiles using standard tools such as compound mitre saws, drills and routers. Because the profiles are the same colour all the way through, they could be machined and cut without loss of colour.
“The Duraplas profiles are unaffected by the humid environment, and can be jet washed without any possibility of fading.
“At the same time, Duraplas is a high-quality plastic construction product made entirely from recycled plastic waste such as plastic bottles, carrier bags and packaging films, so it has impeccable environmental credentials.”
Centriforce Managing Director Simon Carroll added: “Not only does the new stairway offer outstanding performance and durability; it also demonstrates the Alton Towers Resort’s commitment to corporate social responsibility through informed environmental purchasing choices.
“We are delighted to be associated with such a high profile project that demonstrates the versatility and ease of use of Duraplas, as well as the potential of its unique colour range to brighten up leisure environments while reducing maintenance requirements.”
